in 20 seconds. The older kids had a taller box to step onto; the younger kids were
equally challenged on their exercise step. The rope twist posted quite a challenge.
Each one was surprised at how heavy it was, and how much energy it took to keep it moving.
A Florida afternoon rain shower cut short the challenge course, but did not cut off the
smiles of accomplishment. Each challenger competed against themselves, trying with each
iteration to better their time or weight or frequency. These photos show the weight lifting
challenge. How many times could you or I lift that weight above out head in 20 seconds?
Balancing on the exercise step or the box takes a big effort, no matter your age.
The weight lift and dexterity ladder were especially challenging. Even a try at a kettle
weight made for an obstacle course that trained for endurance and flexibility. You can hear
their minds counting...left, right, left, right... Ms Jamison made sure the kids learned that
almost any activity one can do inside, one can also do outside, and that fitness can be fun,
when you have friends along with you.
by Mr.Dee Strange-Gordon, a MLB baseball player and Club
Kid! The end of summer activities included an educational tour of
the hydroponic gardening container, relay races, pick-up football
games, corn-hole bean bag toss, a visit to the resident donkey and crafts.
A Day on the Farm allowed outdoor games such as relay races, corn-hole,
pick-up football and crafts - well, there was a bit of quick thinking needed
to make bean bags for the corn hole out of rice and sandwich bags. As
anticipated, the "rice bags" did not last long, but no harm done, either.
When the makeshift bean bags, filled with rice gave up, creativity rose
up - corn hole became a relay race! Of course, being on the farm means also
learning about the crops grown here. A peak inside a hydroponic "freight farm"
container gave a lesson about farming in the future. What better way to
demonstrate the BGC motto of "Great Futures Start Here"!

A variety of activities that the kids participated in helped them gain information about college, career options, educational facts, and vocabulary words. SFSC was all about school spirit — SFSC representatives wore their orange SFSC t-shirts and the walls were covered with SFSC spirit posters. The kids were awarded prizes at the end to thank them for their participation and to continue to strive for learning in education. As a local college in Highlands County, we want students to know that we are their community resource when they have questions about college and to help them explore career options.
“We love our community and are thrilled to have an opportunity to work with the Boys & Girls Club to motivate students to strive for higher education and spark a desire to go to college,” said Sofia Ochoa, college recruiter at SFSC. “I love my job as a college recruiter and events like this make me happy because we are working with kids who will be successful and make a difference one day. That’s what we see from our students who attended SFSC and we want to inspire future students to get started on their college and career journey and find the right resources available to them at SFSC.
When the students from the Boys & Girls Club think back on this event, they may say, ‘I remember when SFSC came to visit us and we played games, but I learned a lot about SFSC and I want to know more.’” SFSC representatives who participated in the Boys & Girls Club event were: Dolores Breedlove, Take Stock in Children college success coach; Dr. Mark Bukowski, dean of student services; Anastasia Fuchser, Institutional Advancement and Alumni Development coordinator; Rob Hampton, Career Development Center director; Fred Hayes, Construction Trades Program director; George Livingston, Tutoring and Learning Center Math Lab specialist; Cristian Luevano, HSI-STEM coach; Sofia Ochoa, college recruiter; Andy Polk, Student Life coordinator; and Emily Vickers, Health Sciences staff assistant.
